4 Ways to Make a Sofa Look Like New

4 Ways to Make a Sofa Look Like New

On average, sofas last about 10 years. But over time, the cushions get saggy, the color fades, stains become more noticeable, and you’re left with a very sad looking couch.

It’s a rough life for a sofa.

But, it doesn’t have to be the end of the line for your couch – you have the D.I.Y. power to transform and upgrade it into a unique couch. From fabric changes, cleaning techniques, a little bit of fluffing, and more, your lounge furniture can be given a second chance at life. Try out a few of these ideas if your sofa is in dire need of resuscitation, or if it just needs a little sprucing up.

1. Clean it with a fervor

We’re making this suggestion numero uno because let’s be honest, how many people REALLY clean their couch? If only armrests received a little love from Mr. Clean earlier in their life, they may have had a chance – but a little affection now will still go a long way. Find out the fabric of your couch (leather, microfiber, velvet, etc). and research the best ways to clean it. In the future, dust and wash your new couch regularly. By doing so, you’ll greatly increase its life expectancy.

2. Add a couple throw pillows

Can you ever have too many throw pillows? According to designer and Home Made Simple star, Kenneth Wingard, you can. He says, “Shopping for throw pillows can lead to an overloaded sofa, but the number that works for just about every style is three.” So, when looking to update your worn-out sofa, add a few throw pillows into the mix. If your couch is a neutral color, feel free to get creative with your choices. Find 3 unique pillows with the same color theme, but completely different patterns, to really spice up your new and improved couch aesthetic. Sometimes a splash of color is all that is needed to give your sorry looking couch some vibrancy once again.

3. Buy a slipcover

If there’s absolutely no hope for your current couch, yet you don’t plan on buying a new one anytime soon, there’s always the option of using a slipcover. You’ll be able to throw the slipcover in the washer as soon as it gets dirty and can even change the color to anything you want. Switch up the color as much as you want and surprise your guests every time! Be sure to get a slip cover early on after you purchase a new sofa. With one, your couch will be shielded from harm and have a better chance at living a long life.

4. Fluff it up

When your couch cushions start to sag, it’s important you do your part to lift them back up. It’s one of the easiest things you can do to keep your couch in good shape. Every week, fluff and flip your cushions to keep them full. It doesn’t take much time, and you’ll never have to worry about your cushions looking or feeling sunken in. All they need is a little tough love from you to stay in decent condition.

After a couple of years, your couch is bound to see some wear and tear. Do your best to care for it weekly so you can continue to enjoy it for as long as possible.
